Channel 4 takes away Right to Reply

Channel 4 has axed its pioneering feedback show, Right to Reply, after 18 years.

Staff were told today that the long-running viewer feedback programme would not return as planned for a new series in September.

Right to Reply has been running since Channel 4 was first set up in 1982.

"The feeling is that in today's multimedia world viewers have far more interactivity that they ever used to," said a Channel 4 spokesman.

"Public access has always been a tradition on Channel 4 and that will continue on our website."

The Friday evening slot will instead be used for factual and current affairs programming.

Channel 4 said there would be no redundancies and Roger Bolton, Right to Reply's long-serving presenter, will continue to work on other projects.

Right to Reply marked out Channel 4 as the only UK broadcaster to be truly answerable to the public by giving viewers the opportunity to question and criticise programme-makers.
